privacy.
the proof is a passive movement journal for ios. this policy explains, in plain english, how the app handles your data.
short version
the proof stores everything on your device. we do not collect, transmit, sell, or share your location, photos, or any other personal information. the app has no servers, no accounts, no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party sdks.
what we collect
nothing leaves your device. all data the app records — your route points, place visits, derived statistics, and reverse-geocoded place names — is stored only on the iphone where the app is installed.
the proof uses the following ios frameworks, each only on-device:
- core location — to record visits to places and significant location changes.
- core motion — to detect when you are moving so the app can sample your route only during active movement.
- mapkit — to reverse-geocode visited coordinates into human-readable place names. reverse geocoding is performed by apple's mapkit on your behalf and is governed by apple's privacy practices.
- photos — only when you tap "save to photos" on a share card, and only with addOnly permission.
what we do not do
- we do not have a backend or any servers.
- we do not collect, transmit, sell, share, or rent your data.
- we do not use analytics, tracking pixels, advertising identifiers, or third-party sdks.
- we do not require an account, email, or login.
- we do not perform any first-party network calls. the only network activity is apple-internal mapkit reverse geocoding, which apple handles with their own privacy guarantees.
- we do not track you across other apps or websites.
permissions you grant
- always location — required so the app can record places you visit when it is not in the foreground. this is the core function of the app. the data stays on your device.
- motion & fitness — used to detect active movement so the app can sample more densely while you are moving and stop sampling when you are still. saves battery. data stays on your device.
- photos (add only) — requested only when you tap "save to photos" to write a share card image to your camera roll. the proof does not read your existing photos.
you can revoke any of these permissions at any time in ios settings. the app will continue to function with reduced capability when permissions are limited or denied.
how to delete your data
all data lives in the proof's app sandbox on your device. to delete it, uninstall the app. there is no copy of your data anywhere else.
children
the proof is not directed at children under 13.
changes to this policy
if we change how the app handles data, this policy will be updated and the version-control history of this document will reflect the change.
